Participation in Stipendienprogramm der Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz (Geheimen Staatsarchiv PK)

Thanks to the scholarship program of Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz Professor Igor Lyman (Research Institute of Urban History, BSPU) had an opportunity to continue his research of the topic “History of Prussian Consuls in Ukraine” in Berlin during a month, since October 16 till November 15.

Within this period the following was done:

In Geheimen Staatsarchiv Preussischer Kulturbesitz (GStA PK) all files related to the history of Prussian Consuls in Ukraine have been copied. Information about Prussian Consuls in Odessa Walb, Johann Albrecht Bock, Carl Heinrich Bulcke, J. Menger, E.C. Walther, Ernest Mahs, Charles Trebbin, Alexander Regler, Theodor Hofmann; in Kerch Georges Nikolich and Jean Salatich; in Berdyansk Cornelius Jansen and Johann Haemmerle; in Mariupol Matvey Covacevitch have been found. The information about existence of the Prussian Consulate in the sea port of Nikolaev was not confirmed, because the file in GStA PK (Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preussischer Kulturbesitz, III. HA MdA, II Nr. 463: Konsulat in Nikolajew) concerns not Nikolaev on the Black sea but Nikolaev on Amur river.

Because of close regional connections data of GStA PK about Prussian Consulate in Taganrog and Rostov-on-Don, the port cities of the sea of Azov, were studied. For reasons of the comparative approach, it turned out to be useful to study the documents of the Prussian Consulate in St. Petersburg.

In Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Haus Potsdamer Straße) the systematic library heuristic was carried out.
Usage of digitalized databases of Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Elektronische Ressourcen, Digitalisierte Sammlungen etc.) also turned out very productive.

In Haus Unter den Linden of Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin German maps of the regions of Ukraine, where Prussian Consulates existed, were found.

In Lesesaal im ehemaligen Getreidespeicher im Westhafen (Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin) local Ukrainian newspapers with information about Prussian subjects were studied.

Visits to Staatliche Museen zu Berlin (Alte Nationalgalerie, Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Pergamonmuseum, Bode-Museum, Kunstgewerbemuseum etc.) helped a deeper acquaintance with the Prussian heritage. The same can be said about exhibitions in GStA PK and Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin.

During the scholarship some materials for this book “The Greek Community and Consuls of Greece in Berdyansk of the Nineteenth – early Twentieth Centuries”, concerned contacts of Prussian and Greek Consuls in Berdyansk, have been found in Berlin.

Communications and consultations with representatives of Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz helped Professor Igor Lyman to organize the research more effectively.
