The authors present a newly published book, which is a comprehensive study of the history of one family, whose biographies reflect the events of the Cossack history of the Hetmanate; the colonisation of Southern Ukraine in the 19th century; the First World War; the period of liberation struggles of 1917-1921, including the history of the Makhnovist movement; industrialisation and collectivisation; the Holodomor famines; Stalin's repressions; II World War; the Sovietisation of Western Ukraine; post-war reconstruction; the Khrushchev and Brezhnev periods; ‘perestroika’; and the establishment of independent Ukraine, including the tragic events in Donbas since 2014. In total, the research into the Sysyuk family tree revealed information about 3,133 members of this family. Copies of 2,022 documents have been entered into the database, and 6,366 events (births, marriages, deaths) have been recorded in their biographies. In addition to the author's part, the book includes a collection of oral history interviews with members of the Sysyuk family and comments on these interviews, as well as several hundred illustrations: copies of archival documents from the 18th-20th centuries with information about the Sysyuk family tree; family albums, photographs, newspaper clippings, photographs of awards and documents stored in family archives; photographs taken by the authors during field research, etc.
