Directions of the work of the Research Institute of Urban History

1. Multifaceted studying of urban history.

Within this direction provide:

  • continuation of individual Institute’s members studies on various components of the urban past;
  • realization of joint research projects connected with urbanization;
  • organization of conferences and meetings dedicated to urban issues;
  • cooperation with other research institutions and associations involved in studying urban past.

2. Developing a web-site of the Institute, which should become a platform for communication scholars and the public involved and interested in urban history as well as for publishing articles and archival collections of the Research Institute. Besides, the web-site will help inform users about events connected with urban history.

3. Work as an editorial board and authors of historical-cultural anthology «Frontiers of city». Publishing of the journal «Urban History».

4. Conducting oral historical research on urban history with the formation of an archive of oral historical narrative.

Within this direction provide:

  • theoretical and practical training for interviewers;
  • preparing and conducting expeditions;
  • systematization, processing the collected materials;
  • preparation of materials for publication.

5. Development and maintenance of the archive of film documents related to urban history.

Within this direction provide:

  • heuristic work in archives;
  • identifying and copying film documents from private collections;
  • participation in creation on the basis of these film documents documentaries and popular science films on the history of cities.

6. Development and maintenance of the depositary of photographs related to the history of «urban space».

7. Creating in the structure of the Research Institute the Museum of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University, which in a broader context may be considered as a museum of the history of education in an urban area. This should be an educational, research museum.

Within this direction provide:

  • creation of museum’s exposition;
  • codification of museum collections;
  • completion of the official registration;
  • development of texts of excursions;
  • creation of a virtual tour of the museum, which will be posted on the web-site;
  • making the museum a place for conferences and other scientific meetings devoted to urban history.

8. Public activities aimed at popularization of urban history and at interaction of researchers with society.

Within this direction provide:

  • organization of exhibitions, competitions, etc.;
  • initiation and implementation of public projects.

The Institute plans to cooperate with foreign academic and educational institutions as well as with Ukrainian National Memory Institute, Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Primary Sources Studying of M.S. Hrushevskyi (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), Institute of History of Ukraine (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

Taking into consideration interdisciplinarity of urban history the Institute plans to involve in its projects not only historians but also geographers, architects, economists, sociologists, culturologists, philosophers, psychologists.

Members of the Research Institute of Urban History

1. Victoria M. Konstantinova, doctor of historical sciences, professor of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University. The title of candidate dissertation: «Primary Sources of Social and Economic History of Southern-Ukrainian Cities». The title of doctoral dissertation: «The Processes of Urbanization in Southern Ukraine (the second half of XIX – the early XX century)». The author of the monography «Urbanization: Southern Ukrainian Measuring (1861 – 1904 years)» (Zaporizhzhya, 2010) and 12 archeographical books dedicated to urban history.

2. Volodymyr V. Kryvosheya (1958-2015), honorary member of Research Institute of Urban History, doctor of historical sciences, the First Deputy of Chairman of the Ukrainian National Memory Institute. The author of 31 monographies: «Essays on the history of Chernihiv period Cossacks: Ljubech» (Kyiv, 1999), «Essays on the history of Kyiv region period Cossacks: Boryspil» (Kyiv, 2001), «Essays on the history of Kyiv region period Cossacks. Yagotin» (Kyiv, 2002), «Kyivshchyna Cossack: people and fate» (Kyiv, 2004), «Vinnichchina Cossack: History Vinnitsa Cossack Regiment» (Kyiv, 2004) and others.

3. Igor I. Lyman, doctor of historical sciences, professor, the head of the department of the history of Ukraine of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University, the author and editor of 19 books dedicated to urban history.

4. Dmytro S. Vyrskyy, doctor of historical sciences, the Leading Research Fellow of the Department of Ukrainian historiography of Institute of History of Ukraine (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). The author of «Kremenchug in 1917-1920: Provincial images revolution» (Kyiv, 2003), «Ukrayinne city»: Kremenchug from foundation to 1764» (Kyiv, 2004, the 2nd edition – Kyiv, 2011).

5. Vladislav V. Gribovskiy, candidate of historical sciences, the doctorate of Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Primary Sources Studying of M.S.Hrushevskyi (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), the editor of the anthology «Frontiers city» (Dnipropetrovsk).

6. Orest A. Zayats, candidate of historical sciences, the senior scientific work of the department of the history and theory of Archeography and source-related sciences of Institute of Ukrainian Archeography and Primary Sources Studying of M.S. Hrushevskyi (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine). The title of candidate dissertation: «Municipal Citizenship of Lviv in the 15th-18th centuries». The author of the monography «Citizens of Lviv XV - XVIII centuries.: Legal status, composition and origin» (Lviv, 2011).

7. Serhii M. Bilivnenko, candidate of historical sciences, docent of the department of the Primary Sources Studying, historiography and special historical disciplines of Zaporizhzhya National University, the chairman of Zaporizhzhya Scholarly Society of Y. Novytskyi.

8. Iuliia І. Korolevska, PhD researcher of the department of the history of Ukraine of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University. The title of candidate dissertation: «The Gender aspect of Urbanization of the South of Ukraine (the second half of XIX – the early XX century)».

9. Evgen V. Gnybida, PhD researcher of the department of the history of Ukraine of Berdyansk State Pedagogical University. The title of candidate dissertation: «Ukrainian people of cities south Ukraine of the second half of the XIX – early XX centuries».
