Lyman Igor, Konstantinova Victoria. The Greek Community and Consuls of Greece in Berdyansk of the Nineteenth – early Twentieth Centuries (Melitopol, 2020), 494 p.

The book represents the history of Berdyansk’s contacts with Greeks before the Greek consulate was founded in this port city; the history of nine consuls of the Kingdom of Greece in Berdyansk; Greeks’ connections with the British consulate in the city; Greek navigation, export trade through the Berdyansk port and the contribution of Greek merchants to the economic development of the city in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries; role of Greeks in public, cultural life, education and health care in Berdyansk. The book includes information about hundreds of ethnic Greeks – subjects of the Kingdom of Greece, the Russian and Ottoman Empires, the Ionian Republic, which until 1864 was under the protectorate of the British Empire, as well as about representatives of other families with whom Greeks of Berdyansk were in affinity. Emphasis is placed on reconstruction the networking of the Greeks in Berdyansk during the 19th – early 20th centuries based on records in metric books of local Orthodox churches. Details are provided about Greeks who were consular representatives of Great Britain, the Ottoman Empire, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway in Berdyansk, as well as details of networking and affinity with Greeks consular representatives of Prussia, the German Empire, Belgium, France, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Austria-Hungary and Argentina in Berdyansk.

On November 5, 2020, the presentation of this book in a combination of offline and online formats took place.

The authors of the book, as well as the Consul General of Greece in Mariupol Grigorios Tassiopoulos, Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Greek Societies of Ukraine Olena Dobra, Chairman of the Association of National Minorities of Zaporizhzhya Region Naoufal Hamdani, Chairman of Berdyansk City Greek Society Irina Nagaj, doctor Edward Waters (University of Notre Dame Australia) spoke at the presentation.
